I can never say this often enough: Back up your data!
If you’ve ever lost data due to hardware failure or human error, you understand the importance of having readily available backups. Media is not designed to last forever, nor are computers! In addition, today’s malware poses a real threat to your data. CryptoLocker is a ransomware trojan which will encrypt all the files it finds on your network shares. If you become infected by this trojan, you have three choices: 1) restore your files from a recent backup; 2) pay the ransom in bitcoin and receive a key to unencrypt your infected files; 3) lose that data forever.
Unfortunately, data loss is real and it could happen to anyone. Your best defense is to back up your data regularly and verify that the backups are valid and comprehensive. In addition, you want to make sure your backup media is secure and accessible. Cloud backups are great because they’ll always be there but they may not be practical when you need to restore a whole bunch of data in a hurry!
Don’t be vulnerable, be smart! We’ll recommend backup software to suit your needs and implement a backup strategy so you won’t need to worry about losing your valuable data.
